Dunmanway: The Heart of West Cork
Welcome to Dunmanway, a vibrant market town steeped in independent spirit, industrial legacy, and the deep-rooted folklore of West Cork. As you walk these historic streets, you are walking in the footsteps of the generations who shaped the very fabric of our community.
Our Stories on the Street trail invites you to uncover the hidden histories anchored to the buildings, squares, and laneways around you. Founded in 1693 by Sir Richard Cox, Dunmanway grew from a rural settlement into a sprawling, world-renowned hub for the flax and linen industry. Here, the past breathes through every corner – from the benevolent Cox sisters who provided sustenance during the darkest years of the Famine, to the rhythmic clatter of the old West Cork Railway line which departed its last station in 1961.
But Dunmanway’s history is as colorful as it is profound. Alongside monumental archival legacies – such as holding the records of GAA icon Sam Maguire – our streets have witnessed the downright extraordinary. Explore the trail and you will discover tales of John Duffy & Sons Circus making Dunmanway their winter home, including the local legend of a circus elephant who broke away for an adventurous pint and found themselves famously wedged in a local doorway!
